Welcome, Christina and Melanie!

The Greek America Foundation is proud to announce Christina Macropoulos of Hilton Head Island, SC and Melanie Graf of Boston, MA as our latest Hellenic Legacy Scholars for study abroad.

Christina will attend a full semester at DEREE – The American College of Greece in Athens during the 2011 fall semester. Her scholarship from the Greek America Foundation includes full tuition for a semester, valued at $5500.  Melanie will take intensive Modern Greek language classes in Athens and participate in various internships at prominent institutions during the academic year 2011-2012 in Greece. Her scholarship includes a fellowship for living expenses for an entire academic year, valued at over $8,000.

About Christina Macropoulos: Christina is a junior Health Science major at Clemson University in Clemson, SC who will be traveling to Greece for the first time. Known in Hilton Head for her dedication to the small Greek-American community and her achievements as a scholar athlete, Christina recently decided to deepen her connection to her Greek heritage by learning Greek and making plans to study abroad in Greece at DEREE – The American College of Greece.

The Greek America Foundation’s scholarship has been a catalyst not just for Christina to reconnect with her Greek heritage, but for her family as well. As a result of the opportunity to study abroad in the land of her ancestors, Christina convinced her family to spend three weeks before the start of her classes traveling throughout Greece and reuniting with relatives.

After graduating from Clemson, Christina plans to continue her studies with a goal of becoming a physical therapist.

About Melanie Graf: Melanie’s passion for Greece blossomed during her semester abroad at the American College of Greece in the spring of 2010. Since she returned from Greece, Melanie has been an active volunteer at the Greek Orthodox Metropolis’ Philoxenia House and has continued her study of Modern Greek. As a senior at Boston College studying International Relations and Ancient Civilizations, she is anxious to complete her studies and return to Greece for what will be the Greek America Foundation’s first post-baccalaureate fellowship for the 2011-2012 academic year.

The fellowship program offers graduating seniors the opportunity to spend a year immersed in Modern Greek life and engaged in full-time language study while gaining valuable pre-professional experience through customized internships.

We welcome Christina and Melanie to the Hellenic Legacy blog and look forward to hearing about their adventures in Athens!
